“Have you ever wondered how habits shape your child’s daily life? Positive habits can pave the way for success, helping them thrive both in school and socially. Let’s explore how you can help your child build these important habits using our HABITS framework!”

HABITS Framework for Children

Habituation:

“When your child brushes their teeth every morning, that’s a habit! Repeating actions makes them second nature. You could establish a morning routine that includes:

  • Brushing their teeth right after waking up to set a positive tone for the day.

  • Using a fun song to make brushing more enjoyable!”

What morning routines do you currently have in place to help your child start the day positively?

Awareness:

“Grab a notepad and write down your child’s daily habits. Are they mostly positive or leaning toward negative ones? For example:

  • Do they often forget to put their backpack away after school?

  • Do they leave their shoes by the front door?

Recognizing these patterns can help you address them! Discuss with your child the importance of keeping their space tidy and how it contributes to a calmer home environment.”

What habits have you noticed your child struggling with lately?

Behavior:

“Have you noticed that your child struggles to concentrate during homework? Consider setting up a special ‘study corner’—a quiet space with all the supplies they need. This can help them focus better on their assignments.

  • Decorate this corner with motivational quotes or images that inspire them to do their best!”

What distractions does your child face when it's time to do homework, and how can you help minimize them?

Intent:

“Understanding why certain habits exist can help you support your child more effectively. If your child often interrupt family conversations, it might be because they’re eager to share. Teach them to:

  • Wait for their turn or use a polite phrase like ‘excuse me!’

This understanding can guide you in helping them develop more considerate communication skills.”

How Do you currently encourage your child to communicate during family discussions?

Transformation:

“Let’s turn a negative habit into a positive one! If your child avoids reading, create a cozy ‘reading nook’ for them with comfy pillows and a good lamp. Set aside regular family reading time to help them develop a love for stories.

  • If your child finds reading boring, you might choose exciting books or incorporate reading games to spark their interest.”

What types of books or activities can you introduce to make reading more enjoyable for your child?

Sustainability:

How do we keep positive habits going? Create a ‘habit tracker’ where your child can check off completed tasks, like reading for a certain amount of time each day or completing their homework.

  • Making it fun to see their progress can motivate them to continue! For instance, if they complete their reading for the week, you could celebrate with a special treat or family outing.”

What rewards or incentives might motivate your child to stick with their positive habits?

Using the HABITS Framework in Daily Life

“Consider integrating the HABITS framework into your family’s daily routines. Set aside a few minutes each week to discuss what habits are working and which ones need attention. This not only helps in building awareness but also strengthens your bond as a family.”

“Using this habits framework, you’re helping your child build a brighter future. Remember, with patience and consistent support, you have the power to guide your child toward thriving in every aspect of their life.

Let’s make every day an opportunity to grow and shine together!"
